Montezuma’s Revenge

We don’t take very many family vacations and Scott and I have never taken one without the boys.  It practically takes an act of Congress to travel with the boys.  Dax gets car sick often so just a short trip up north to Madeline Island can take a couple days filled with breaks, contingency plans and Dramamine.  So why wouldn’t we take the kids with us on an 8 hour flight to Hawaii for a week?  Families do it all the time right?  We were able to fly first class both ways thank goodness, but you should have seen peoples faces when they saw they were sharing it with kids after what they paid for tickets!  It took me a solid month to plan this.  My mother bought every hand held game she could find, they each had a lap top with movies and games.  And this was just for the flight.  There were many things that went awry.  Small things like Dax’s insistence not to wear the seatbelt on the plane, or him in the rental car on the way to the hotel.  There were the scary things like him throwing his sandal off the 31st floor, it landed in the pool, empty pool thankfully.  We were on high alert the whole time, we were on the 31st floor and there was so much traffic around our hotel.  All of this was fine, manageable, we had a wonderful time and the week just flew by.  Until about 6 pm the night before we were going home.  Now we had to check out at 11 am the following morning and our flight out wasn’t until 11 pm that night.  Daxton seemed strangely quiet after our trip to the beach that day, he actually fell asleep.  He was still in a good mood and we did some last minute shopping before heading back to start packing.  About 6 pm the boys were playing with their new remote helicopters and suddenly Dax just threw up… all over the room.  He continued to throw up the entire night and anything that went in came back out until the morning after we got home.  We debated, try to stay one more night and change our flights which wasn't an option.  So we packed up and checked out.  There’s a lot to do in Hawaii but with a sick kid you’re really limited!  We took them to the mall.  Why not?  No really, they have a pharmacy there so I could pick up supplies and talk with the pharmacist.  The whole day he was like a Hollywood film starlet with all his costume changes.  Luckily Scott was a frequent flyer so we ended up in the lounge tucked away in a little room for 6 hours.  As soon as we got on the plane Dax conked out and slept until our layover in San Francisco as 5:30 AM.  He seemed to be coming around, even kept a little juice down.  We managed the rest of the flight without incident and arrived in 14 degree weather.  By that evening he was happy and jumping around and we were all happy to be home.
